Pascal Wehrlein passed his medical checks and was declared fit for the Formula 1 Canadian Grand prix.
The Sauber driver crashed during the Monaco Grand prix last Sunday after Jenson Button hit him. His car stopped sideways to a barrier. The driver was still in the cockpit and could not get out of it. Several minutes passed before the marshals were able to assist him.
Afterwards Wehrlein went to the medical centre. He got the all clear there but decided to go through additional checks. The German missed the first two races of the 2017 F1 season due to injury sustained in the Race of Champions in January.
“It was just scary. The brakes started to smoke and I couldn’t get out of the car obviously. The only thing I wanted to do is get out of the car when you see the car starts to smoke”, Wehrlein explained his feelings after his car upturned.
Pascal Wehrlein blamed entirely Button for the incident
“I am very upset as this is a result of an unnecessary overtaking manoeuvre. Button was nowhere. Clearly this corner is no place to overtake. It was a silly move. Bearing in mind that Jenson and I were both on a similar strategy with the pit stop in the first lap, and far off from points. An annoying incident which should not have happened.”
Jenson talked to him after the race. He got a 3-place grid sanction and two penalty points on his license taken by the steward. The Brit does not intend to participate in a Formula 1 race this year.
Checks all done ✅
