Patrick Lange won the 2018 Ironman World Championship title – his second Ironman – in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The German triathlete competed using a race handlebar that was engineered and produced by Sauber Engineering. That happened as part of Project 101 – a collaboration between Sauber Engineering, Swiss Side and Canyon.

The race consisted of 3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling as well as 42.2 km running.

Lange won it by covering the distance in 7:50,39 hrs. While that was a record, it also meant that he beat his 8:01,40 hrs course record from 2017.

“We are delighted to congratulate Patrick Lange for winning his second Ironman World Championship title”, said the head of Technical Development Christoph Hansen.

“It was a true pleasure to collaborate with Patrick, as well as Swiss Side and Canyon, on our shared project. Having contributed to the development of his bicycle by engineering and producing its race handlebar, the team at Sauber Engineering is proud of Patrick’s spectacular achievement and looks forward to seeing what the future has in store for him.”

“I didn’t have my best swimming, as you could see, but afterwards it went incredibly well. “Thank you for the energy out there, thank you Germany”, Lange said on German broadcaster ZDF.

The 32-year-old triathlete also had a special surprise after the finish of the race. He proposed to his girlfriend who was speechless and managed to answer by just nodding. Meanwhile, everyone around applauded his win as well as the personal part of the finish.
