Lewis Hamilton took a wonderful victory at the Italian Grand prix. He and Sebastian Vettel collided after the start, the German spun and had to gain places during the rest of the race. Kimi Raikkonen started from pole and at first, kept the lead. A safety car came out because of incidents and at the restart, Hamilton passed him. The Finnish Ferrari driver did not give up and took back the first place.

Strategy played a great role in the race as Mercedes kept Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas as long as possible on the circuit before their first pitstops. Raikkonen was the first from the lead in the pits. He managed to get back on the circuit in front of Hamilton but Bottas continued to be first at that moment. That was crucial in the race as Kimi’s tyres suffered badly and Hamilton got the chance to attack. The Englishman passed Raikkonen at the end of the race.

Bottas battled with Max Verstappen after his pit stop. They clashed and the Red Bull driver got a 5 seconds penalty. He was furious and accused the stewards of “killing the racing”. The penalty meant that Bottas and Vettel were classified in front of Verstappen who took the fifth place. His teammate Daniel Ricciardo stopped earlier with a power unit failure. Fernando Alonso also had an engine problem while Brendon Hartley retired after the clashes at the start.
