Daniel Ricciardo was fastest in Friday’s second free practice for the Azerbaijan Grand prix. The winner from the Chinese Grand prix and winner of the 2017 Baku race outpaced Kimi Raikkonen in qualifying simulations with the ultrasoft tyres. The difference was just 0.069sec. But the Australian driver was also fastest on the harder supersoft compound. Once again, the Red Bull team demonstrates how to minimize the difference in maximum power. Despite the loss in the third sector, Ricciardo eventually achieved top results. The pace in the long stints was also very good.

After a lot of problems in this session as well Max Verstappen recorded the third time. That only confirmed the good decisions in Red Bull and the intended way of working on the track with a very smooth asphalt. Only fourth and fifth were the Mercedes drivers Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon took the next places, confirming the morning progress of the McLaren and Force India teams in the search for speed that was lacking in the first races.
As the drivers work through their long runs, we’re seeing more variety in their tyre choices that give a clue as to the race strategy. @danielricciardo @redbullracing currently on supersoft. @LewisHamilton currently on soft (as well as #Kimi7). Make of that what you will.
