The Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were fastest in the first Friday free practice before the British Grand prix. The Englishman gave the best time of 1:27.487min while his teammate Valtteri Bottas was second, at 0.367sec. Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari was third, at 0.511sec from Hamilton.

The fastest times during the session were given on soft tyres – the softest compound for this weekend. The other two are hard and medium.

The session was quite eventful as drivers and teams got acquainted with the new surface at the Silverstone circuit. Steering the F1 cars proved quite a challenge. Hamilton even mentioned this is the bumpiest track he’s been on. There were a few offs – Romain Grosjean’s had the most serious consequences. He crashed, damaging the front end of his Haas.

At the very end of the session, Max Verstappen stopped on the start-finish straight. He thought there was a problem with the gearbox.
