The worlds of Game of Thrones and BMX have collided in a stunning fantasy project for photographer Lorenz Holder. A two-year dream of two-wheel tricks to the backdrop of the fictional location Westeros reached fruition. The result is a stunning shoot with Austrian rider Senad Grosic.
Holder was inspired by watching Game of Thrones. He got hooked on finding out the location for Westeros and the Haunted Forest. The photographer tracked many of the series’ locations to a small hub in Northern Ireland.
He contacted Grosic about the project and the Austrian rider jumped at the chance to be the star turn in front of the camera.
Photographer and rider had to get up early. The alarm typically went off at 4.30am for the 10-day shoot. That was in order to beat the crowds of tourists, of course, because of the popularity of the series.
The project was fittingly labelled ‘Riding Thrones’. The pair visited the fictional locations of the Iron Islands, Dorne, Winterfell, the Kingsroad and Dragonstone, among the actual real locations Bushmills and the Giant’s Causeway. It led to a series of stunning pictures in a wide variety of backdrops.
Holder said of his original Game of Thrones idea: “I was immediately inspired and knew I wanted to shoot there as well. When we arrived in Northern Ireland, I was blown away by how beautiful and untouched everything was. You get the weather of a whole year in one day.”
