Rain began to fall over Hungaroring about 20 minutes before qualifying started. It did not start pouring in Q1 and the drivers even had the chance to make laps on slicks. Daniel Ricciardo made a peculiar choice for softs while everybody else took ultrasofts. The Australian managed to get to Q2 but then remained 12th and out of Q3.
It was pouring over the circuit for the second and third qualifying segments. Drivers made more mistakes and Lance Stroll even crashed and broke his Williams’ nose.

In Q3 it was still raining until the conditions got a fraction better at the very end of the segment. Raikkonen was leading at that point before both Mercedes drivers to knock him to third.
