Lewis Hamilton led a close fight between Mercedes and Ferrari during the second practice session for the Chinese Grand Prix.
Cool and cloudy conditions again prevailed at the Shanghai International Circuit. Hamilton remained the driver to beat, but faced a closer challenge from his opponents.
Hamilton set a time of 1:33.482 on Pirelli’s Ultrasoft tyres, which proved to be the fastest, despite having a couple of scruffy moments on corner exit at Turns 12 and 14.
Hamilton’s time was a mere 0.007s faster than Kimi Raikkonen. With Valtteri Bottas just 0.033s behind his Mercedes team-mate in third position.
World Championship leader Sebastian Vettel wound up fourth, 0.108s down on Hamilton, after the conclusion of their low-fuel Ultrasoft efforts.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished a couple of tenths further back in fifth position, while Daniel Ricciardo failed to get in a clean lap and classified down in ninth spot.
The Red Bull drivers were split by Renault pair Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz Jr., who in turn sandwiched Kevin Magnussen, the Dane again emerging as Haas’ lead challenger.
Fernando Alonso rounded out the top 10 for McLaren, using a slipstream from team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne along the back straight to good effect to edge Force India’s Sergio Perez.
Pierre Gasly finished in 12th place for Toro Rosso – unable to replicate its Bahrain pace but still solidly among the midfield – while Esteban Ocon, Vandoorne and Brendon Hartley followed behind.
Vandoorne halted on track with 15 minutes remaining. McLaren failed to firmly affix his right-rear tyre during a practice pit stop.
Sergey Sirotkin displayed stronger pace relative to Bahrain. He finished just 0.007s down on Hartley, while a gap of three-tenths followed to Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson, who held the same buffer over team-mate Charles Leclerc.
Romain Grosjean and Lance Stroll finished comfortably adrift of the midfield. Both made mistakes on their Ultrasoft push laps.
Grosjean spun through the medium-speed left-hander at Turn 11. While Stroll lost the back end of his Williams FW41 at Turn 8.
Light drizzle fell during the final 10 minutes of the session, prompting some late running on Intermediates. But the bulk of proceedings were unaffected by rain.
