Jenson Button came back to Formula 1 for one weekend – quite unexpectedly, but still had fun, although his weekend finished with a crash. The 2009 F1 World Champion took Fernando Alonso’s place, while the Spaniard participated in the 2017 Indianapolis 500. And Jenson Button made it clear that he has no desire to do any more races this season.

His answer to the question whether there might be more stand-ins in 2017 was: “Who knows, but I don’t plan on it”.

“I also know that the team don’t plan on moving their race drivers around”, he continued.

“So no, it’s definitely not the plan for me to race again this year in Formula 1. In other categories, possibly yes. But not in Formula 1. I’ve got my own things that I’m enjoying away from the sport at the moment.”

Button qualified 9th in Monaco but had a 15-grid penalty for changed engine components. After a few more changes he started from the pitlane. Later the Englishman retired after colliding with Pascal Wehrlein. The stewards gave him a 3-place drop on the grid but the penalty is somehow hollow, if he will not appear in other races during the season.

The best moment of his afternoon was perhaps a phone call from Alonso before the start. The Spaniard wished him luck and asked Jenson to take car of his car.

“Ok, I’m going to pee in your seat”, replied Button with a laugh.
