Lewis Hamilton won an emotional pole position for his home British Grand prix. The Mercedes driver was just a fraction faster than his Ferrari rivals but that was enough. Sebastian Vettel took second, at 0.044sec while Kimi Raikkonen was third, at 0.098sec from Hamilton.

Brendon Hartley did not take part in the qualifying as Toro Rosso did not manage to repair his car after the crash in FP3. Pierre Gasly was with a changed suspension because of his teammate’s incident.

There was a delay during Q1 because of an incident with Lance Stroll. He went off the circuit and into a safety zone. The Canadian driver could not continue in the session which turned out to be a real nightmare for Williams. Sergey Sirotkin also lost control over his car. He managed to get back to the pits and even made an effort for another stint but could not continue after Q1.

There were no surprises in Q2.

In Q3 Vettel was leading after the first stints of the drivers from the top 3 teams. But Hamilton was even quicker in his last attempt and celebrated his 76th pole in front of the packed grandstands.
